How this is made
The Room Index is written by hand, one entry at a time, from material that anyone can check. This page sets out how the eighteen houses were chosen, which sources are used, what is deliberately absent, and how to report an error.
How the hotels were chosen
Four categories were fixed first, then houses were placed in them one by one. Each had to be a real hotel, open at the time of writing, with enough published material to describe without guesswork. Where a group runs several addresses, one building was chosen and named. No house was included because it was easy to write about, and none was dropped for being ordinary.
Which sources are used
Entries are built from the hotel's own pages, from maps and street plans, and from published writing about the building. Where a claim could not be confirmed, the sentence was rewritten so that it stayed true without it. Anything specific to a season or a group address is attributed to the house in the text rather than stated flatly.
What is not here
There are no prices, no star gradings, no room counts, no reviews and no booking links. Hotels are not compared with one another and nothing is ranked. Weather, access and availability are never promised, because none of them can be. Where a detail changes often, the entry says to confirm it with the house.
Reporting an error
Entries carry the month and year they were last checked. If a house has closed, moved, been renamed or been described wrongly here, write and say so, with a source if you have one. Corrections are made to the entry and the date is reset. Use the address on the contact page.

The Room Index is an independent reference. It is not connected with any hotel listed here and sells nothing.
